Becoming a Teacher

Do you enjoy being a teacher? :) Is it stressful being one?

I absolutely love being a teacher. There are very few other jobs I would rather do than be a teacher…and most of them include possessing skills or powers that are not natural. Being able to share ideas, passion, enthusiasm, and laughs with students is amazing. However, it is incredibly stressful. There are so many different things that happen each day, and so many of them you cannot control. And you are much more than a teacher: you are a counselor, a jailor, a mentor, and entertainer, and a manager.

Also, on a sad note, I have been told twice now that I am undate-able because I spend too much time working. And that has hurt a lot. I sometimes feel torn between the two. But I realize that I just need a man that is mature and understanding enough that I can have two loves in my life: him and my job. Until then, I guess I gotta keep my head up.

Tonight I accepted an award of excellence for teaching. Two students nominated, which is rare in our school. I am so proud and beaming. This reminds me that even on the hard days, this is the best job in the world.

When taking quizzes in Social Studies, I allow my students to use a textbook. It is not to find the answers, but to back up their answers with evidence (a direct quote). This is a new concept to a lot of my students and they are still struggling.

One particular student made up his own quote for the definition of a nomad:

“I am not trying to be rude to them, but they have no money.”

I appreciate the sentiment, but I don’t know how much I agree with this statement. Specifically about income. “Success” in this context is not a measure of intelligence or potential, but a measure of the quantity and quality of assignments turned in, the ability to be consistently present in class, the time to devote to the school community, etc.

A fabulous person standing in the front of the classroom can earn a student’s respect, can encourage that student to the best of his/her ability, can accept that student for all that is offered, but it can’t help a student not fall asleep in class, because her family has to share a noisy apartment with far too many people. It can’t help a student find time to do his homework because his parents work all hours and he’s responsible for his younger siblings. Their homework takes precedence [and everything else].

I love rich print posters…I am always changing them, this is an oldie but a goodie, just a classic favorite of mine. It can be used for many grades. When we do our independent reading we always grab a post-it. :-)

This is a note one of my students wrote to the principal during his breakfast meeting with him. Being a first year teacher, and positive feedback is heaven sent. I love this, even though we are not studying scientist times.
